In the mountains where they once fought, a motorcycle club of Bosnian War veterans defends a herd of wild horses and discovers a new kind of freedom for themselves. Unlike too many hopeless postwar films, this immersive feature documentary about one small mountain town shows how one man can help his town finally emerge from the shadow of war. Lija was a paramilitary commander at the young age of 20. He now heads the Wolves—a motorcycle club he’s transformed from rowdy stereotype into a surprising force for good. In between humanitarian projects in town, they always return to the front line. It’s there, working to save the horses they first bonded with during the war, that we get a deeper understanding of how recovery happens, as they confront their past and reclaim that territory as a space for healing. "Among Wolves" give us an unflinching look at the complex personal, social, and political circumstances that challenge life in this neglected region. More importantly, it shows us the role of self-determination to help real healing take place against the odds.
